How to Finance Car Repairs While You Are in College

How to Finance Car Repairs While You Are in College
Posted By: Brooke Chaplan on August 19, 2021

Unexpected expenses can often feel like a disaster when you are in college. As a student, your budget likely doesn’t leave room for much more than your basic needs such as housing and food. While you might have a little wiggle room for minor expenses for entertainment, hearing that you need car repairs can feel like a major blow. Paying for car repairs while you are in school is easier when you can take advantage of the following potential options.

Seek Financial Help From Friends or Family Members

It is hard to ask for help, but this might be one of those times when you need to lean on the support of others. Your parents might be willing to temporarily loan you the money, or they may be willing to cover the repairs as a gift. If you do borrow money from a family member or friend, make sure that you can pay it back to preserve your relationship.

Check Out Your Insurance Coverage

You might be overlooking one of the best ways to finance your car repairs right now. Most likely, you carry insurance on your car, and this is exactly what it is meant for. If you were at fault in the accident, then comprehensive coverage can help you get the repairs done. If someone else was at fault, then their insurance should pay.

Once you make your claim, all you need to do is find a shop that works with that insurance company to cover the cost of the auto body repair. Repairing a vehicle’s body as soon as possible is important because dents can significantly weaken your vehicle’s structural integrity. In addition, damages like rust can spread to the rest of your car if they are ignored for too long.

Utilize Your Savings

If you’ve been working on building a nest egg, then now is the time to accept that things don’t always go as planned. Taking some money out now can save you money later since your car will be more valuable when you are ready to sell it. Repairing your car may also make financial sense if you no longer need to make payments and don’t want a new car loan. You can always put money back into your savings to get it back up to its normal balance.

Repairing your car is essential when you rely on it to get you to school or work, and you’ll be glad that you did when your car retains its value. In some cases, you might even be able to combine one or two of these options to make the repairs even easier to cover. Working with an affordable and honest repair shop also goes the extra mile towards helping to keep the costs within a reasonable range. No matter how you decide to have your vehicle repaired, there is no doubt that having it fixed can be a wise investment.
