5 Careers That Are a Good Fit for Those Who Value Their Independence
Posted By: Anita Ginsburg on August 31, 2021

Although many people associate a career with an office and coworkers, work doesn't have to be that way. Many jobs are suitable for those who prefer to work alone or to move around. The following five careers are excellent choices for those who value their independence.

Horticulturist

Horticulturists, which are a mix between professional gardeners and scientists, spend many hours alone working with plants. They’re knowledge and research can help farmers and other growers as well as landscape architects and other fields. If you enjoy quiet solitude combined with sunlight and vigorous physical activity, you may wish to consider a career in this field. The demand is fairly steady, so you'll be able to find work.

Professional Pet or House Sitter

While anyone can drop in to feed a friend's pet or bring in the mail, pet and house sitters are paid employees. To work at either or both of these professions, you need to have clean background checks. You also must have a good knowledge of pet or home care. If you like working alone, then pet or house sitting may be the career for you.

Truck Driver

CDL truck driver positions require a specialized driving license and the ability to remain focused for long periods.

Since truck drivers can drive up to 10 hours per day, you must have a great deal of stamina and self-discipline. If you're interested in this career, you should know that there are many training programs that offer graduates CDL truck driver positions once they secure a CDL license.

Data Entry Clerk

If you don't mind attending to details that bore many people to tears, then a career as a data entry clerk might be a good fit for you. These specialists work to maintain databases. They spend much of their time finding current information and typing it into spreadsheets. Since data entry clerks can work remotely, you can enjoy quite a bit of solitude during your workday.

Paid Grocery Shopper

For many people, grocery shopping is a tedious, time-consuming chore they just want to be done with. Because of that, often, they’re happy to pay someone else to do it for them. If you have an eye for detail and can quickly find items in stores, then you might be interested in becoming a paid grocery shopper. These professionals excel at correctly selecting groceries and other products from a customer's list and quickly delivering the items to a set place in the store or the customer's home. You can often create your own schedule with this kind of position.

These five careers are only a sampling of professional positions available to those who value independence. Even if you enjoy working alone, there is a suitable career for you.
