Rust College Freshman Receives Scholarship from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity
Posted By: Angelica Owens on January 20, 2022 HOLLY SPRINGS, MS – Roshaun Hughey, first-year student from Chicago, Illinois, was the first-place recipient of the 2021 Upsilon Delta Academic Scholarship presented by the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated on January 12. As a part of Alpha Phi Alpha’s Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College initiative, the fraternity believes that “school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success.” The Upsilon Delta chapter decided to choose four, first-year male students to apply for the scholarship. Applicants were instructed to write a 250-word self-reflecting essay on a life lesson they learned after a failure. A Social Science Education major, Roshaun received $350 toward his academic pursuits. “My biggest failure was how I lost myself before I came to college,” Hughey said. “As I found myself during that time... I’m thriving now. With me thriving now and knowing who I am... that’s how I was able to win this scholarship.” “The idea came about as the chapter was preparing to purchase a spot for Rust College’s Founders’ Week tailgate event. The space desired would cost the chapter an additional $100,” said Kendrick Armstrong, Campus Enrichment Counselor, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “During a conversation with Ms. JoAnn Scott, she suggested that instead of paying an extra $100 for a bigger spot, we should create a scholarship for a freshman. The idea was born.” When asked how it felt to be selected as the scholarship first-place winner, Hughey confidently replied, “it felt great! I just knew that I was going to win. I put a lot of passion into that essay; I knew I was going to win.” “$300 was the original goal,” stated Upsilon Delta chapter president, Lansing Champion. “However, we decided that whatever we raised over that amount, we would also include in the scholarship.” Other first-year applicants included Keshawn Waters, Cliff Hamler, Jr., and Cornell Patterson who were all individually awarded $50. The Rust College Alphas plan to make this an annual award and increase the amount each year.
