Repairs You Can't Put Off Even if You're in College
Posted By: Kara Masterson on March 22, 2022 Going away to college is an American rite of passage that puts young students in an interesting position of being truly on their own and taking steps to becoming fully-fledged adults. On one hand, many students find themselves living on their own and away from their families for the first time, thus forging a sense of independence; on the other hand, if they move into a dorm or a college apartment, they will have to be mindful of certain auto repairs. Awareness and PreparednessThe first thing to know about having to face the prospect of repairs is that they will need to be done at some point. Many repair situations can be prevented, but only to a certain extent. Most of these situations are accidental, to begin with, so what really matters is knowing what to do when they occur, and this means being prepared. If your car, for example, is prone to breaking down, being prepared means carrying a smartphone with a full battery charge plus the number of an emergency roadside assistance service. Automotive Tire Maintenance and ReplacementWe tend to forget that tires are the only parts of our cars that are in constant contact with the road. Improperly inflated or worn-out tires are road traffic dangers that must not be ignored; this is why it is important to learn how to use a tire gauge so that your tires can be inflated to the recommended seasonal PSI. Windshield RepairOver the last couple of decades, advances in automotive glass technology have made windshields far more resistant, but there comes a point when chips or cracks can no longer be patched up, and this is when windshield replacement services are required. Unless your car insurance provides comprehensive coverage, replacing your windshield would be an out-of-pocket expense, but it should not cost too much unless you drive a luxury sports car. Full Automotive Tune-UpTechnically speaking, this is not a repair; it is a maintenance service that can go a long way in preventing serious automotive issues and expensive repairs. A full tune-up is highly recommended to college students whose living arrangements require them to drive to campus on a daily basis; it should include replacement of the spark plugs and wires, changing all the fluids and respective filters, flushing the radiator, and repairing the ignition system if needed. For many students, having a car during their college experience can be a great advantage, but only if it is subject to proper maintenance and repairs; otherwise, it could instead become an unnecessary headache.
