Thinking About Going Into Engineering? 4 Jobs Within That Field

Posted By: Anita Ginsburg on August 22, 2022 Engineering is a broad term for designing, building, and maintaining things or systems. While most engineers have strong mathematical skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and at least a bachelor's degree, they don't all have the same kind of job. Career opportunities within the engineering field are diverse and specialized. If you're considering a career in engineering, here are four disciplines within the field that may appeal to you. Biomedical Engineer A biomedical engineer can directly impact patient lives as they work alongside clinicians on devices that solve health problems. As a biomedical engineer, you might work in artificial organ design or medical equipment installation and maintenance. You might also be a researcher who works with a chemist or medical scientist to write reports and present findings that others use to directly help patients. Mechanical Engineer As a mechanical engineer, you would probably use computer-aided design software as you research, design, build, test and ultimately release new items for your employer's use or purchase by the public. Products could range from gas and steam turbines to generators, batteries, robots, and just about any other machine or device that requires creation and production. Mechanical engineers must keep government regulations and industry design standards in mind while creating safe, useful products. Civil Engineering Civil engineering focuses on designing, building and maintaining infrastructure like roads, dams, bridges, and tunnels as well as water and wastewater facilities and more. Experts in this field are responsible for creating the Eiffel Tower, New York's subway system, and many other marvels. You might choose to specialize in transportation, geotechnical, architectural or coastal engineering, which are all subspecialties of this field. Your work in civil engineering could involve cost projections, ensuring government compliance, and surveying. Systems Engineering Systems engineers work with a team of other professionals to create and manage business systems. They don't work on creating items or physical structures. This big-picture discipline often involves making sure that each part of a project fits within the whole. While some people associate systems engineering with computer networks, systems engineers may work with another system type instead. Depending on your position, your job might involve documentation, testing, troubleshooting, or daily operations. Engineering jobs usually pay well, include good benefits and have set hours, so they may be appealing if you have interests beyond work and want to step away from your job each evening. A position in the diverse engineering field could be perfect if you don't mind getting an appropriate college education and want to make a difference in the way people, businesses and the world operate.
