Associate Vice President, Development
The Division of Development and Alumni Relations has an exciting opportunity for an Associate Vice President, Development to work in Coral Gables, FL.

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations supports and promotes the mission, purpose, and priorities of the University of Miami through fundraising and engagement by building and nurturing strategic philanthropic relationships to improve and transform the lives of individuals and communities. The Associate Vice President is responsible for the success of all Coral Gables/RSMAS school and area-based fundraising efforts initiated within the Division of University Development & Alumni Relations (DAR).

The AVP will ensure effective strategy, implementation, evaluation, reporting, and refinement of Development activities to support and achieve unit annual and campaign goals. This includes ensuring the program has clear strategic objectives, measurable outcomes, aspirational work plans, performance metrics, and is well-positioned
for university-wide benefit and service.

The AVP collaborates with deans, the provost and colleagues in Development and Alumni Relations across the university. They will serve as an active member of DAR’s Executive Leadership Team, assisting with strategic planning and implementation of fundraising priorities. The position will be responsible for personally managing a portfolio of donors and prospects.

Fundraising Responsibilities:

Develop and oversee the execution of comprehensive fundraising plans for Coral Gables/RSMAS-based schools and colleges and select other programs. Oversee prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship and set specific development goals and objectives that align with divisional strategic goals and are attainable within budgetary constraints.

Recruit, train, mentor and retain a highly effective team supporting unit development efforts. Create an environment of collaboration, cooperation and excellence. Establish fair and consistent metrics and accountabilities for the team, measure performance, and provide constructive feedback for improvement.

Work closely with the provost, deans and faculty to prioritize fundraising within their units through trainings, annual and campaign plans and priorities, fundraising activities, and communications plans. Determine fundable projects and package them appropriately for consideration by prospective donors.

Work with fellow divisional leaders, including Principal Gifts, Estate and Gift Planning, Foundations and Corporate Relations, Engagement and Philanthropic Giving and Digital Engagement to elevate giving for unit-based fundraising. Work with Development Resources to improve systems, gift management, budget, training and reporting on development progress.

Lead by example, by building a personal portfolio of prospective donors; qualify
, engage, cultivate, solicit and steward high-level prospects and donors at the major giving and principal giving level.

Serve as a member of the DAR Executive Leadership Team, actively participating in strategic planning, budget development and goal setting at a leadership level. Assist in creating and revising policies and procedures for DAR, and participate in problem-solving and innovation for the Division.

Foster a smoothly operating function through adherence to institutional policies and practices and ensure compliance with the code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives.

Skills and Abilities:

Leadership and management skills to motivate staff members and encourage a team-of-teams approach to meet Division and University fundraising goals; be a team-oriented strategist able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes
competing constituencies; be comfortable working in a fast-paced, results-oriented, and structured environment.

Possess strong collegial interpersonal skills and excellent written and oral communication ability as reflected in proposals, oral presentations, and strategic plans; be organized, creative, energetic and assertive.

Have broad knowledge of fundraising principles and techniques, preferably in a complex academic setting; Have proven success in building productive, long-term relationships with key business leaders, senior University leaders, faculty, staff, volunteer boards and high-level donors.

Be a self-starter able to secure personal appointments and qualify new prospects; demonstrate achievement in securing significant philanthropic gifts and bring practical fundraising experience in developing strategies for high-level prospects who have the capacity to make transformative gifts.

Have a strong knowledge of fundraising data systems and reporting tools and a demonstrated working knowledge of the philanthropic aspects of tax law is required.

Have the ability to travel to visit donors and/or attend strategic events, including on evenings and weekends when necessary.
Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in an academic setting or other not-for-profit organization.



15 years of experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.



Demonstrated experience in leading a high performing academic fundraising team.



Proven track record of fundraising, personal solicitations, and the development of building a successful team.



Previous experience in utilizing complex centralized database to meet fundraising goals.



Previous experience in working with volunteer-based support
groups.



Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are necessary, with a philosophy of teamwork and hands on implementation.



Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required and the ability to interact with all types of individuals.



Travel is expected.



Knowledge of Access, Excel, Microsoft Word, and demonstrated working knowledge of the philanthropic aspects of tax law is required.
