Janssen Research and Development is recruiting for a Senior Scientist, Small Molecule Discovery Pharmaceutics located in San Diego, CA.

Our Discovery-Facing team is passionate about providing support to the Discovery organization from Hit ID through identification and selection of clinical assets. As an integral part of a cross-functional team, you will closely collaborate with key partners, including discovery chemistry, pharmacology, DMPK and pre-clinical safety.


Janssen’s small molecule portfolio offers the opportunity to work across a diverse space of chemical matter which includes traditional small molecules, protein degraders, oligonucleotides (siRNA and ASO), and peptides across a range of delivery modalities, including oral, injectable, inhaled, ocular, and topical applications. You will work on programs across these molecular constructs and routes of delivery within your role. You will also collaborate with internal and external partners to explore innovative ways to effectively deliver complex molecules.


Delivering on our Discovery programs will require the ability to work collaboratively with our partners. You will support discovery activities by providing experimental and intellectual input regarding molecular properties and how they affect formulation options and developability properties. Strong interpersonal skills and the proficiency to thrive in a team and goal driven environment are key attributes.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Within this role, you will run experiments and provide functional input to Discovery teams to influence molecular design and delivery modalities as well as participate in the selection of drug candidates.
  • You will also be collaborating with Development partners and provide recommendations on topics such as solid form selection and formulation strategy for toxicological studies and First-in-Human clinical trials.
  • This position will require hands-on/lab-based support while offering leadership opportunities.
  • The successful candidate will have a strong scientific background in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry or pharmaceutics.
  • Of additional benefit would be knowledge of drug delivery, in-silico/in-vitro modeling and pharmacokinetics.
  • We are seeking an individual who is passionate about the prospect of working across multiple chemical and drug delivery modalities!
  • Learning agility is of high value and is required for the position.



  • A PhD in Physical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Sciences or closely related field (0 - 3 years experience) or MSc (>8 years) of relevant experience


Experience and Skills:



  • Thorough understanding of physical and pharmaceutical chemistry principals is required
  • Design and develop formulation approaches to enable preclinical studies via various routes of administration is required
  • Proven ability to transform ideas into practical solutions is required
  • Independent thinking and the ability to effectively collaborate in a highly matrixed environment is required
  • Track record of scientific contributions including peer reviewed publications, patents and/or presentations is required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills is required
  • Ability to conduct laboratory experiments is required
  • This position is based out of San Diego, CA



  • Experience with following characterization techniques: DVS, DSC, TGA, PXRD, PSD analysis, UV/Vis spectrophotometer and microscopy is preferred
  • Experience running dissolution/precipitation studies using μDiss/μFlux apparatus is preferred
  • Experience producing amorphous solid dispersions for preclinical use is preferred
  • Experience in physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling is preferred
  • Understanding of solid state, chemical and physical stability of API and drug products and biopharmaceutics is preferred
