Job Description
Professional Coder
The Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a full time Professional Coder position. The incumbent reviews medical records to validate codes assigned by physicians and identifies issues and resolves discrepancies to ensure accurately and efficient coding records.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Verifies patient information and works with caregivers to obtain clarifications of patient diagnosis.
Identifies misplaced or potentially litigious documentation and reports findings to management.
Reviews records for accuracy of scanned documents and reports any poorly scanned documents to management.
Collaborates with other departments to ensure that record accurately reflects services provided and to identify documentation trends.
Assigns and sequences diagnostic and procedural codes to encounters.
Reports unusual circumstances, possible risk factors, report problems, errors, and discrepancies to management.
Surveys caregivers on documentation issues and coding idiosyncrasies.
Maintains current knowledge of coding rules and regulations.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent required
Certified Coding Specialist, RHIT or RHIA Certification.
Certified by either AHIMA or AAPC
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
