As a UW employee, you have a unique opportunity to change lives on our campuses, in our state and around the world. UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem-solving skills and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier population.

UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits and natural beauty. All of which has allowed the UW to be nationally recognized as a “Great College to Work For” for four consecutive years.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) is seeking a full-time Research Scientist to process and analyze genomic data resulting from the Dog Aging Project (DAP), and from the DLMP Research Sequencing Service (RSS) core. Responsibilities will be split 50:50 between these two activities.

The Dog Aging Project (DAP) is an innovative NIH-funded initiative that brings together a community of tens of thousands of dogs and their owners with veterinarians, researchers, and volunteers to carry out the most ambitious canine health study in the world. The RSS is a newly established genomics core focused on providing sequencing and bioinformatic support for research-oriented faculty to further the research mission of the department. The RSS aims to support several pre-existing cutting-edge bioinformatic analysis pipelines, including whole-genome/exome, RNA-Seq, ultra-high accuracy Duplex Sequencing, and single-cell sequencing technologies.

We are seeking a Research Scientist – Genomic Data Scientist with a background in Cloud-based data science and familiarity with genomic data and standardized data analysis pipelines. For the DAP, the scientist will be responsible for the management and curation of genomic data from thousands of participants. For the RSS, the scientist will be responsible for working with multiple faculty to analyze a variety of sequence data and delivering the results to the client laboratory. In both cases, a strong knowledge of Cloud-based workflows and working with genomic data (FASTQ, BAM, VCF files, etc.) and RNA-Seq is required. We offer a supportive and collaborative environment that provides a high degree of independence and excellent opportunities for intellectual and professional growth. The Research Scientist will work under the supervision of Drs. Scott Kennedy and Matthew Dunbar and will build on data processing, analysis, and reporting pipelines that the RSS, DAP, and individual faculty laboratories have already developed for some of the activities mentioned below.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ingesting, processing, and analyzing data deliverables using already established pipelines (FASTQ, BAM, VCF files)-20%.
• Performing data analysis and assisting with the preparation of figures, manuscripts, and funding applications-20%
• Identifying potential issues with data and taking appropriate actions to guide the resolution process. -15%
• Consulting with client research laboratories about analysis options and visualizations-10%.
• Communicating with research labs about DNA and RNA sequencing status updates-10%.
• Ensuring data availability for expected timelines-5%.
• Communicating with the commercial platform contracted to sequence DNA and impute genetic variants from saliva samples of 10,000+ dogs enrolled in DAP-5%.
• Generating genomic reports for DAP participants using tools and html reports developed by DAP-10%.
• Facilitating raw sequence data archive for client laboratories to private (AWS S3) or public repositories (NCBI SRA)-5%.
Qualifications & Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Master's degree or higher in Bioinformatics, Genomics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Statistics, or Computer Science or related study in a closely related field.
• 1-3 years of job-related experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Experience with Linux or Unix-based environments.
• Strong computing skills in R and Python or related languages.
• Experience and familiarity with workflow definition languages (WDL preferred).
• Exposure to and experience in Cloud Computing.
• Must be organized and detail-oriented, with excellent communication and organizational skills.

Desired Experience
• Experience in analysis, interpretation, and synthesis of population genomic and/or RNA Seq data.
• Experience in data visualization and scientific communication.
• Applied work involving reproducible coding practices, such as well-documented code, version control, and use of code repositories (GitHub).

The Dog Aging Project and Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology are committed to creating and maintaining a diverse, respectful environment where people of all backgrounds are welcome and can thrive.
