African American Community Outreach Coordinator

The Education and Guest Services Division provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernon’s one million annual visitors and students in classrooms around the country. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences, engaging public programs, and online resources, we expand each learner’s understanding of, and appreciation for, George Washington and the world in which he lived by building connections to their lives today.

The Learning Department creates programs and provides expertise for specific audience groups that engage in learning at Mount Vernon: students, teachers, and intergenerational groups that include children. Within this department, this position would strengthen capacities for Mount Vernon to better understand and meet the needs of African American community members in these groups in achieving Mount Vernon’s mission to inform and inspire.

Starting Salary Range: $40,000- $45,000

Position-specific Responsibilities:
Assist the Director of Learning in developing and implementing programming and projects done with the League of descendants of the Enslaved at Mount Vernon and other communities of color providing input—such as the “Lives, Loves, and Loss” program, the Cemetery Commemoration Ceremony, and the Descendent Audio tour initiative.
Contribute to developing inclusive programs for youth across the Learning department to better meet the needs of youth of color, both with family programs and school programs
Create and publish outreach materials, such as quarterly descendant email, that strengthens connections and continuity with those interested in the connections between Mount Vernon interpretation and descendant lives today.
Support target audience (family, student, and teacher) programming (online and onsite) that will strengthen youth participants connections to the civic legacies of George Washington through an inclusive lens.
Maintain and update contact list for community input and promotional outreach to include descendants, Black Women United for Action, local and national education networks, local community and leadership youth organizations who work with underserved audiences.
Build institutional knowledge and practice of academic and pubic history practice related to community engagement and African American history of the founding era.
Assist with other Learning Department projects and programs as needed

Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
2-3 years of relevant work experience in museum or public history arena and/or community outreach and networking post Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent. 1-2 years in related graduate work can contribute to years of experience required.
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English. Bi-lingual language skills (especially English/Spanish) will be an asset in consideration
Friendly and professional demeanor that will contribute to positive community building
Sincere interest and knowledge of history and African American studies preferred
Ability to work creatively and effectively as a member of a team
Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse colleagues and partners
Experience with youth

Special Requirements:
Must be able to interact outside for long periods and move across large portions of the estate on varying surfaces, inside and outside, and in a variety of weather conditions. Must work some weekends, evenings, and holidays.
