THE CHALLENGE Lead efforts to forecast and assess market valuation and statistical analysis of power generation assets, hedge structures, and trading strategies. Independently build out in-house electricity market models to support origination, re-contracting, and M&A due diligence efforts. Develop tools for automating models and processes in energy markets, improve model integration with other in-house analytical tools and processes. Lead quantitative research tasks and recommend optimization strategies pertaining to power, ancillary services, RECs, and capacity markets. Collaborate with several different functional teams across the company, including asset management, operations, finance, accounting, and business development to support the day-to-day management of the portfolio assets and future growth opportunities. Monitor market developments, rulemakings, and trends and provide analysis and forecasts of critical changes. Conduct risk analysis for portfolio. Other duties as assigned. Position will be based in one of three Onward Energy office locations: New York, Charlotte, or Denver. THE TEAM The Commercial and Risk Management team is a hard-working group of varying levels of experience that collaborate on all market facing activity at Onward Energy with a specific focus on portfolio optimization and re-contracting. The team is responsible for optimizing the profitability of a growing asset portfolio and the implementation of risk management strategies. THE WORK ENVIRONMENT The position functions in a smoke and vape free professional office environment. The role routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as laptop computer, phone, and scanner/photocopier. THE PROFILE TO SUCCEED Bachelor’s or advanced degree in engineering, economics, mathematics, or a related quantitative field. Experience may substitute for degree. 10+ years of relevant quantitative experience Broad background in energy and quantitative analysis in both organized and bilateral wholesale electricity markets with thermal and renewable generation. Advanced quantitative problem-solving skills with the ability to synthesize data from various sources, understand issues and trends, and identify solutions. Extensive experience using Python or another comparable programming language (e.g. R, Matlab, C#, etc.) for quantitative analysis and model development. Experience using cloud-based computing services are a plus. Experience using Power BI, a plus. Extensive Knowledge of organized electricity markets in North America, including ISONE, ERCOT, CAISO, as well as knowledge of bilateral energy markets. Advanced proficiency using Excel Experience communicating quantitative concepts and results to both technical and non-technical audiences. Must have strong interpersonal skills to interface with all levels of company personnel and external customers. Keen multi-tasking capabilities and organizational skills; attention to detail.
